12 Tips For Hitting A Home Run With Your Blog

Every blogger dreams of having their blog shared by thousands of people on the internet and having tons of comments on each of their blogs. However, as Heidi Cohen says, (and I agree), you can’t focus on that or else your blog will fail. You can write a stellar blog post, but that doesn’t mean that every post is going to be as magnificent as your last. You need to include key elements in each post and build expectations among your readers, which will yield that home run.

Here are 12 tips on how to get that home run every time you post a blog.

  1. Be real. Don’t be afraid to share your opinion. People read your blog because they like the way you say things.
  2. One post at a time. Every blog platform gives you the option of how many blogs you want to display on your blog page at a time. Consider changing this to one. This way you get better analytics on which blogs generated the most interest. If you show the last three to five blogs on your blog page then you have no idea of what content kept them there the longest.
  3. Know your audience. Just like when you write post for Facebook and you write them for their news feed and not your wall, same goes here. Look on your recent search topics and see what people are looking for or how they arrived on your blog. Understand your readers needs and post content that fulfills that need.
  4. Always incorporate a thumbnail or larger photograph with each post. This makes it good for sharing on social media outlets, such as Pinterest, Facebook, and Google+. It also grabs the attention of the reader and conveys a message. Infographics are also good. For some reason, people love looking at data in a creative way.
  5. Grab your audience with a great headline. Headlines are key into grabbing someone’s attention. More tips on how to write a good headline.
  6. Optimize your blog for SEO. Using keywords in your title, first paragraph, and in your tags is always smart but always having fresh content is even better. However, don’t take my word for it. See 15 SEO Experts Give Their Best Tips for Blogging.
  7. Ask questions. One way to get people engaged in your blog is to ask them questions either at the end of your blog or in the beginning. And be sure to respond because people who leave comments like to see that a blog is active and that they are not talking to a wall.
  8. Links. What do you want the read to do next? Once you have them reading your blog, you want them to stay there. Consider either adding a plugin that gives related content, inserting hyperlinks to previous content you’ve written that is relevant to the topic at hand.
  9. Layout. Making your content easy to consume for people on the go is important because 8.49% of people (globally) browse on their mobile vs their desktop. Bullets, bold face type, and italics are a lot easier to read than giant paragraphs of text. And easy to consume = want to share.
  10. Make it easy to share. You can have a home run blog, but if you don’t make it easy to share then it doesn’t really matter then, does it?
  11. Syndicate. The best way to get your blog out to the masses is to syndicate it by submitting it to other blog curating sites.
  12. Lastly, good grammar matters. If you use incorrect grammar, it makes you appear less credible regardless of your expertise. Tip: A good rule of thumb is to put it into a MS Word document and correct any issues before posting.
