Top 11 Blogging Tips

Blogging tips seem to be a dime a dozen out there and they all pretty much say the same thing: have something important to say, like to write, and write often. Yet, while I won’t argue that those are all good tips, that’s not quite enough to have a successful blog.

I’ve scoured the web and have compiled some additional tips that I think will  give you some added benefit. Here are my Top 11 with my own twist (in no particular order):

  1. Have an opinion on what you are writing. Reporting the facts can get boring and really lacks personality.
  2. Comment on other people’s blogs who write on similar topics as you without posting your link to your blog in the body (that looks like spam). Put it in the optional URL field and leave it at that. If you have an interesting comment, people will want to check out your blog. Leaving your link in your signature or in the body just looks desperate.
  3. Be sure to make it easy for the reader to engage with you on your blog. If the reader has to register to leave a comment or it’s cumbersome in any way, they’ll usually abandon the blog. People like to be heard so make it easy for them. You can always monitor your spam comments.
  4. Avoid blogger burnout by not committing to write every day. Set yourself up for success. Find a schedule that works for you and your company. And if you can’t deliver one week, try getting a guest blogger.
  5. These days everyone is reading content on-the-go so be sure that your blog is viewable on a mobile phone, an iPad, and in the various browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari).
  6. Images are important, and I’m not talking about putting your face on every blog post. Fun, relevant images are catchy. People love pictures and if the picture is good, people will stick around to read at least the first paragraph. Less than 50KB is best in terms of size.
  7. Suffering from blogger block? Read the news or other people’s blogs and develop your own opinion on the subject. Reading is how we become better writers anyway.
  8. Comments: it’s great to receive comments and you should definitely interact and respond, but you can also turn that comment into a new blog post so that it reaches a wider audience too.
  9. Link to other relevant bloggers. Bloggers are grateful people and they will return the favor at some point. This is a great way to build traffic to your blog and website as well.
  10. Giving away free stuff attracts people to your blog. It can be an e-Book, an hour of services, a gift card, etc. The point is, it draws people to your blog.
  11. Invest in your own URL. Yourbusinessname.wordpress.com is a lot harder to remember than socialstrand.com. It’s cheap and easy to do.
