How To Promote Your Blog for Free

Often bloggers and companies have great content on their blogs, but no traffic.  We talked last week about search engine optimization in your blog, but how do you get those back links and how do you get your blog out there so that people know you have something witty or helpful to say?

  1. Back links can be achieved in a number of ways a) having good content, b) submitting your blog to bookmarking sites such as Delicious or StumbleUpon. Or an inorganic way is to ask a fellow blogger for some help by swapping back links.
  2. Commenting on other blogs is always helpful and usually results in reciprocation.
  3. Create a blogger outreach list that you can send emails to about upcoming posts.
  4. Submit your blog URL on sites such as Alexa, Yahoo!, Google, LoadedWeb and Bing – but do not pay for it. It’s free.
  5. Get yourself a sitemap for your blog. (xml-sitemaps.com is a great, easy tool for this)
  6. Get a guest blogger because it not only saves you time, it’s a win-win for both parties in that it gives you credibility and it connects you to other networks of people.
  7. If you don’t have a daily blog, but you update frequently, consider adding your blog to Ping-o-Matic – it updates different search engines that your blog has updated.

And of course, you need to make it easy for people share your blog content. There are plenty of social plugins to do this (Add This, Share This). Making it easy for them to share makes them  more likely to share. Plus, Google indexes Twitter pages so chance of your content being found through an organic search if someone retweeted it improves if you let them tweet it right from the blog page.
