12 Tips for Using Social Media to Promote Your Next Event

eventWhether you are a nonprofit or for-profit, promoting your event can be one of the most time consuming tasks. Having the steps and tools can help make that process a little easier.

Before you can promote your event you need the following: 1) date & time 2) venue and 3) a name for your event. Once you have that – you’re ready to promote it.

  1. Create a unique registration webpage for your event.
  2. Selling tickets? Embed your shopping cart either via a link or embed code on your event webpage.
  3. Create editorial copy for your event for each social media outlet (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, your newsletter, etc). Remember, different vehicles require slightly different messages because of who is reading them and how they are being delivered.
  4. Use Bit.ly to customize your URLs so that you know where your marketing efforts paid off.
  5. Post your event online: (Create an event page in Facebook, post it on Twitter, mention in your LinkedIn status update/group/company page, etc).
  6. Create a press release and distribute it.
  7. Send out a Save-the-Date e-blast 6-8 weeks prior to your event.
  8. Utilize Twitter apps to promote your event such as TweetMyEvent and more.
  9. Post reminders on social media outlets weekly leading up to the event.
  10. Always make sure you have a link to either your event web page or your registration in all of your communications.
  11. Post pictures from the event afterward on your social media outlets – create a Facebook album, Tweet photos from the event, post them on Picasa or Flickr.
  12. Follow up with your participants with a post event survey, a newsletter indicating what a success it was, or an email or social media post letting them know where and when the next event will be.
