Your Social Influence Measured Many Ways

Ahh, the social sites that measure your social influence, how influential your brand is and where you stand in the sphere of social media. First there was Klout, then Kred, then Sulia and now Social IQ…and more to come you can count on that. It seems that people and companies are eager to jump at any tool that will quickly assess their “social influence” with a number.

Many brands are turning to measuring their social media ROI by measuring their social influence score. But what do all of these scores mean if they don’t all measure the same citeria and if they are not all measuring the same social networks? And how can I translate that number into what really matters such as sales, new clients, evangelists for my brand?

Some measure Google+ but Google+ isn’t available for brands yet. Some measure Facebook pages, but what if I am an admin for many pages? Some measure Tumblr and Blogger, but not WordPress. Some only measure Twitter, but what if my company has way more interaction on Facebook?Oy vey!

Every time Klout changes their algorithm my Klout goes up and down like a yo-yo. Klout measures your score like this:

Klout measures your reach, amplification, and network impact. It measures it by measuring how many people you influence, how much you influence them, and how influential they are. is a tad more simpler in that it currently only measures your influence on Twitter and only takes into account two things: 1)Influence, your ability to inspire others via retweets, replies and new follows and 2) Outreach, being your generosity, rewards actions and interactions with others. They also use keywords and hashtags used over the last 1,000 days of posts – not just Twitter Bios and promise that more networks will be added soon.

Social IQ – measures the ability of influencing others’ thoughts and actions towards specific areas driven by user interest and expertise. More specifically, it tracks the mentioned criteria through basic information on profiles, size of aggregate networks, content activity, content quality and the interest it triggers from from direct and extended networks, and the aggregate buzz that user content can generate.

So, at the end of the day, what constitutes a good Klout score? According to Klout:

  • The average Klout Score: 20 so don’t beat yourself up
