Twitter pulled out the big guns last week: from launching Twitter Brand pages with 21 brands (looking forward when that will be available to the larger masses), to a new user interface. Both announcements were received quizzically by the public.
The internet was full of the same repetitive story about how Twitter Brand pages have rolled out to 21 companies. Some were questioning if that was really necessary and others were applauding that Twitter has joined the social media ring with Google+ and Facebook to battle it out for the #1 social network spot. Personally, I suspect that Twitter will roll out Brand pages for all, but possibly at a premium. After all, their business model is a little lackluster.
The new interface was received the same way. Some people loved it, some people hated it and some people still can’t find it. The way to get early access to it is to download the mobile app to your smart phone. Once you add your account on the mobile site, it will be available on the desktop site. I found this to be quite smart of Twitter to make you download the mobile app to get access to the new interface in both places. They even supplied a little YouTube video that in 2 days, received 417,000+ views. Savvy.
There seem to be some things missing in the new Twitter interface, and I suspect that it rolled out due to an Executive’s deadline whose year end bonus was depending on it. The translate function is missing – that seems like a big miss considering 50% of their users are outside the U.S. You can manage multiple accounts from your mobile, but not from the desktop interface- that would be sweet. And apparently, easy access to lists is not so intuitive and should be added to the front nav (currently you need to click on your profile icon and select it from a drop down list).
But they seemed to also have added the Discover button which is kind of a take on LinkedIn News. And the new layout is simple and clean.
All in all, I like it. So what do you think? Love it, hate it, don’t care?
