Do you have the new Facebook Timeline? You can get it here. But before you run out to go get it, read on.
According to a recent article on Tech Crunch, Facebook’s new Timeline will only give a user 7 days to tour the new timeline and hide anything you don’t want others to see. Seven days? It’s a bit unclear on why the “rush” on only giving you seven days, but one thing is for certain: this could hurt you in more ways than one.
- Surfing Facebook during work hours when you are not supposed to be?
- Posting inappropriate pictures or posts to friends that can potentially prohibit you from getting a job
- Any posts you posted prior to learning about Lists that could be detrimental
The point is, just when you thought that a post disappeared and is no longer visible on the wall, now it is there for everyone to explore in your timeline. Of course you can delete it entirely, hide it from certain people (mom? boss?), change the date or add a location:
but…how many posts are we talking about here? Let me do the math for you:
If you have been on Facebook since it launched in Feb 2004, and you have done, let’s be conservative and say, 5 things on Facebook per week ranging from “liking a friend’s post/photo, posting a status update/mobile upload, fanning a company page, leaving a comment, playing a stupid ass game like FarmVille, etc.” we’re talking you need to go through 2080 items for the past 8 years. Who has time for that?? And in 7 days nonetheless! And what if you were way more active than that? Wouldn’t it be a lot simpler to just delete your Facebook account and move on over to Google Plus? Hell yeah!
Now, they did make that process easier for you by giving you (and only you) access to your Activity Log, but first let me tell you from experience (and I only joined Facebook in 2008) that it takes F-O-R-E-V-E-R to delete stuff. I’m sorry but on a personal level, I feel Facebook has lost it’s edge. From a business perspective it’s still a viable source of sales and engagement for most brands.
