But one good thing about being small is that you can react more quickly to market trends and demands. However, you also have three things in your arsenal that you might not know you have that give you a big advantage over the big guys.
- Keep it simple. You already have your own specialties. This is something that many bigger businesses do not have the luxury of having; they have to focus on many specialties for many people. By keeping your business focused on your specialties, you will meet consumer expectations and garner future referrals.
- Customer Service. By being a small business, you don’t have to answer to anyone. You can make your own rules and deal with customer service issues personally. It also gives you real-time feedback that big brands don’t get normally. You can have that relationship with consumers that only big brands dream of because you can offer that one-on-one customer service experience. While some big brands might deliver you a marketing offer personalized with your first name in it, the truth is that you not only know your customer’s first name, but you probably also know their kid’s names, can make recommendations and know how you can best serve them.
- Local. Believe it or not, people like to buy local because it makes them feel like they are giving back to the community – which they are. It also makes them feel like they are important as you get to know them and everyone wants that “Cheers” feeling where the person waiting on you knows and greets you by name.
