5 Things You Need Have Before You Incorporate Video Into Your Marketing Strategy in 2013

So recently my inbox has been inundated with marketers telling me how important video is going to be in 2013. In fact, if you’ve received and opened any of these emails, you’d already know that it’s going to be all the rage this year. Which led me to dig a little deeper. I mean, video has been around for years. We’ve seen a lot of creative video campaigns from Old Spice guy to overnight internet sensations like Rutgers University adjunct professor Matthew Ferguson. So why is it now in 2013 that all of a sudden I need to be using video more?

Well maybe it could be because in 2012, we watched 18% more video than we did in 2011. And according to MarketingProfs, personal relevance will be the key to increasing video engagement in 2013. But I think there is more to it then that and here’s why I think you need to incorporate video into your 2013 marketing strategy.

Why you need to incorporate video into your 2013 marketing strategy

  1. According to Forrester Research, “Video is the fastest-growing digital content category; we forecast that more than 90% of the online population will regularly watch online video by 2017.” Wow! That grabs your attention, doesn’t it?
  2. According to SundaySky,456.6 million content videos were watched in 2012.
  3. Video increases time spent on your site, is great for SEO, and most importantly — it’s interactive and engaging!
What you definitely NEED to have before you create those videos.
  1. A good microphone. Nothing is worse than watching a video where the sound sucks. (I use a Snowball mic)
  2. A decent camera. It doesn’t have to be state of the art, but the picture should be clear.
  3. Uploaded in the right format. YouTube and Vimeo have specifications so that your video will play properly. This includes loading quickly and caching. (by the 10 second mark, if you video isn’t loading or isn’t caching properly, 40% of viewers abandon ship.)
  4. Call to action. Like with any advertising, you need a specific call-to-action while you have your audience captivated. Annotations are a great way to enforce your call-to-action.
  5. Capture leads. I haven’t tried it, but I’ve seen it in action – LeadPlayer. For $107 you can capture people’s email addresses right in your video. How cool is that?
