How To Reset Your WordPress Admin Password

In the past month I’ve had two clients who were unable to change anything or log into their WordPress sites due to not having the “admin” password. One client had some web work done by a developer from oDesk who managed to change the email address on the Admin userID to his own, so even the “Forgot password” link wouldn’t do him much good. Then he left oDesk and disappeared. Yikes!

Often times this happens to small business owners because they hire someone to create or update their website and the designer changes their credentials for whatever reason and then fails to give the new passwords to the small business owner.

Now if this happens to you, of course you can click “Lost your password” and if your email is attached you can follow the instructions in the email. But if you don’t have access to that email anymore or if it’s not your email attached, you need to find an alternative way.

There are a number of ways you can change this but all require access to the back end via the host provider. How I fixed this client’s issue was by accessing phpMyAdmin. Note: use phpMyAdmin at your own risk. If you doubt your ability to use it, seek further advice. WordPress is not responsible for loss of data.

How to reset your WordPress Admin Password through phpMyAdmin

  1. Log into your phpMyAdmin and click databases. (In this case, his phpMyAdmin was located under the MySQL Database icon)
  2. All of the tables in your database should appear. Select wp_users.
  3. Click on “Browse” tab/icon
  4. Locate the username “admin” and click Edit.
  5. Next to user_pass will be a bunch of letters and numbers. Delete those and enter in your new password. Note: this is case sensitive. Then select MD5 from the user_pass dropdown, scroll to the bottom and click “Go”

That’s it. You should be able to log into your site. This will work for any password.
