Social Media Tips for Recruiters

Catching TalentEveryone wants to nab the best talent. But how do you nab the best talent without looking like a social media stalker (because that’s what you look like when you send me one of those InMails on LinkedIn). Social media recruiting is all about relationship building. So take these things into consideration:

  1. Quality vs Quantity. 
    Grow your network organically. If someone can’t recall how they know  you, you reaching out later could be futile. Although it’s your job to connect with the best talent, but tell them why you might want to connect with them rather than sending them some ridiculous connect request or InMail that just says “recruiter stalker”.
  2. Be Proactice.
    Are you an Tech recruiter? Then why not be proactive and try to connect with tech people prior to needing them. Tell them that you know they may not be looking for a job right now but that you really think their skills are marketable and that you would like to connect for future reference.  You want to try and build these relationships now so that when it’s time to hire, you can rely on these people.
  3. Get Savvy with Search
    Whether it’s LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Google, Instagram, or Pinterest, there’s plenty be searched for in terms of skills, education, and interests to match your open positions.  Actionable Tip: Use advanced Google search strings such as “site:linkedin.com Engineer San Francisco, CA” that pull all profiles on LinkedIn that match your criteria – in this case, all Engineers in San Francisco. This search strategy can uncover hidden candidates in Facebook, Twitter, or any other social network.
  4. Start in-house.
    Online recruiting is all the rage, but it starts with your current employees. Ask them to post a position to their LinkedIn status updates and get them engaged in the whole process. Employee referrals are the #1 fastest time to fill (29 days for referrals, 39 days for job boards, and 45 days for career sites) (Source: Jobvite Index 2012)
  5. Utilize your status updates
    You can certainly post on social media sites or job boards and those cost money, but it costs you $0 to post a position in a status update on your various social networks.  Actionable tip: Use hashtag of #jobs or #hiring on Facebook and Twitter and you can join in on the conversation too.
