3 Benefits of Social Bookmarking for Business

Social Bookmarking 101Social bookmarking sites are starting to become more and more popular. They’re not only a great tool personally, but also for business. Let’s go over the basics first:

What is social book marking? It’s the essence of saving bookmarks of websites to a public Website and tagging them with keywords.

What makes it different from bookmarking a website on my computer? Social bookmarks live on the server or in the cloud of the website you save them to and can be accessed anytime from anywhere in the world. Whereas, sites you bookmark using the “bookmark” tool in your browser are limited to that computer only, and if that computer crashes, well, you’re kind of S.O.L. Plus, when you bookmark something on your computer, even if you put them into folders, once you get past 20 in the list it becomes ugly to look at and hard to manage. This way, it’s nice and neatly organized and stored by someone else. Ahhhh.

How do social bookmarking sites work? They allow you to categorize the information you save (a website) with keywords that are created by you (the end user). Unlike SEO, you create as many keywords as you can to make your bookmarks more searchable and find-able by others. The keywords are not ranked by % like they are in SEO (search engine optimization).

Now that you understand what social bookmarking is and how it can simplify your life, let’s look at 3 benefits of social bookmarking for business:

  1. Establish your expertise by bookmarking sites on a particular topic and utilizing the same keywords each time. By doing this, people will start to follow your stuff and eventually you can incorporate (from time to time) your own content.
  2. Use it to obtain information about competitors in your industry. Think about it, someone has already gone to the trouble of bookmarking it and tagging it for you, all you need to do is read it. It’s like going to the library and reading a catalog about your industry and competitors.
  3. Showcase your content with others. has a new feature called Stacks, which are equivalent to categories. You can name a stack anything you like and then share it with your newsletter list, your friends, colleagues, etc. Some social media strategists will tell you to bookmark all of your content, some will tell you to be a bit more conservative and only bookmark the important stuff that delivers value. But stacks can be all about your own content. For example, if you sell real estate and have a blog giving tips and tricks, then you can create a Real Estate stack called “Tips and Tricks for the Home Owner” and it can consist of all of your tips & tricks blogs.

Popular social bookmarking sites are, StumbleUpon, Reddit, and Digg. There are many others, but these are the top 4.
