9 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Use Facebook Timeline Promotions

Facebook Timeline PromotionsBy now you’ve been inundated with Facebook’s press release that they are now relaxing the rules on Page managers for Page Timeline promotions. They’re letting you use the comments, likes, and page posts as entry and voting mechanisms.

For nonprofits and small businesses who don’t have a lot of time, money or resources, this is a great option for you.  For example, now you can do this — and not get busted by Facebook police:

However, as a Page Manager, you should know that it’s okay for the dirty last minute post to garner more engagement as Melisse Restaurant did above, but it’s a Page Admin nightmare to run a promotion on your Page timeline and not really all that great for you. Here’s why:

9 Reasons Why Facebook Timeline Promotions are No Bueno

  1. You can’t “fan gate” people to participate in the promotion. (Get new fans by requiring them to ‘Like’ your page).
  2. You can’t customize the experience as you could with a custom tab by using a third party app.
  3. You might get more engagement, but it might knock you down in the news feed with Facebook’s new algorithm.
  4. You will have a hard time controlling fraud on any contest that utilizes likes as votes or entries
  5. You won’t be able to capture any lead data about the entrants
  6. You may also have a hard time contacting the winner because of lack of captured data
  7. You won’t be able to accurately draw a winner because:
    – You can’t see after 500 ‘Likes’ on a status update so any “random drawing” would be unfair.
    – If you do a “share this post to win” you’ll only see public shares (and ‘shares’ are not public by default).
  8. Your PTA (People Talking About) will increase, but only for existing fans (non-fans will not show in this number).
  9. You won’t be able to leverage referrals to gain more entries into your contest if they share your post with others.

And let’s face it, as one person put it, these changes are really only benefiting Facebook because ALL of their changes are for themselves and not for you. Ha!
