Giving Social Thanks

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, a day for us to sit back and reflect what we are grateful for and give thanks. In fact, every day is “Thanks-giving” in the world of social media. Thanking your followers, fans, constituents, or customers for RT’s, mentions, following you, interacting with you, singing your brand’s praises to their friends –are all good reasons to thank them. You should not take any good deed for granted.

Now, there is more than one way to skin a cat and more than one way to thank your fans. With Black Friday just 48 hours away and Cyber Monday right around the corner, it is prime time to take advantage of thanking your fans. Sure you can offer the standard paper coupon discounts. But why not make it social? By utilizing geo-location services such as Facebook Places, Gowalla, Foursquare, etc, you can offer them a discount or a freebie if they check-in to your establishment on one of those days. Or offer discounts or freebies to just your Facebook Fan page to either current members as a way of saying “thanks” or host a contest or trivia game just for Facebook or Twitter fans. Give your constituents a reason to want to check out your social sites frequently. Virgin America and Jet Blue both take full advantage of this by offering exclusive special discounts to only their Facebook or Twitter fans.

It’s one thing to have a social presence, but the key is to make your constituents understand that being a fan is valuable to them. Demonstrating that value up front will¬† ensure their loyalty and they will return often to see what’s going on.
