How-to Get People to Click on Your Content

You spend a lot of time on your editorial content calendar, planning your marketing strategy and then you put your content out there and no one is clicking on it. What the hell? There are many blogs out there that will tell you how to increase traffic to your blog/website by putting a Retweet button or other share buttons on that page, but how do you get them to click on it in the first place?

People click for 3 reasons:

  1. Catchy headline/title in 8 words or less. Titles with 8 words or less receive a 21% higher click-thru rate than those with more. Think about what makes you want to go to a specific article in a magazine. That’s how you need to write your headline. The shorter the better.
  2. They are going to get something out of it, usually:
    a) knowledge that they can share
    b) something that will enrich them in some way
    c) will satisfy a curiousity
  3. It doesn’t look like SPAM.
On Facebook & Google+ things with images get more clicks than just plain links. On Twitter, it’s the opposite and remember, thumbnails are always better than logos.

Keep this in mind when you promote your content:

  • You don’t necessarily have to restate the title in your tweet or post. (you can see the title in FB or Google+ and on Twitter, chances are it’s too long anyway.)
  • Ask yourself, “would you click on it if you saw it from someone else?”
  • Mash the tweet up 4 different ways and tweet it four times over the next 32 hours and see which headline gets the most clicks. Track it with 4 separate URLs from (it’s free)
  • When posting on Facebook, look at your Facebook Insights and try publishing things at different times of the day. Which ones get the most impressions? Which ones get the most clicks?
