How to Manage Your Blog While On Vacation

All bloggers will tell you that the most important thing next to posting quality content on your blog is to post on a regular frequency. If you’re a daily blogger or if you post several times a week, going on vacation can pose a problem. Most bloggers will tell you that if they take off for a few days, their blog hits and comments start to drop and the decline can last for weeks. In addition if you make money off of your blog, that goes down too.

They start to decline because people think you “quit” your blog. Sure you can post a sticky blog up that says “on vacation – be back on X day” but that may or may not work. So what can you do?

When I go on vacation here’s what I do:

  1. Schedule my blogs out for the week. Since I post daily, I make sure that I schedule one for every day and one or two for when I get back so that I am not stressing out over writing content.
  2. I schedule my social media posts to promote my blog ahead of time via HootSuite. (Confession: I use HootSuite in real-time too because I think the user interface is awesome for responding and having real-time conversations).
  3. Download the blog app for my mobile phone. This allows me to respond to comments, check my stats, make any quick changes, or if there is breaking news I can upload a new blog with images. WordPress and Blogger both have mobile apps. (so does HootSuite, and all 3 are free).
  4. Recruit a guest blogger for the week. It can bring new followers and a fresh perspective.
  5. Since I have a business blog and often talk about new technology, if I get the chance to go somewhere exotic, I can create a post about my vacation and the technology I used to take the photos – like I did with Instagram and the fabulous shopping spree I went on, albeit not a vacation. But you get the picture.
