Just Say No to Linking your Twitter Account

When it comes to making social media updates easy, many of you link your Twitter account to your Facebook and LinkedIn accounts because Twitter makes it so easy for you to do. However, it really is going against all of the social media rules out there. Linking your Twitter account to your Facebook or LinkedIn can be painful for several reasons.

First, do you really want every tweet going up on LinkedIn? LinkedIn, although more social now than ever, should maintain a professional image. The fact that you tweet expletives that you dropped yet another AT&T call or that you just laid the stinkiest fart bomb ever, well not everyone in your professional circle needs to be privy to that information. If you post on LinkedIn and you think it’s worthy to tweet, then by all means, check the box. But linking them vice versa, is not such a good idea for your career.

Second, linking your Twitter account to your Facebook account or Fan page is zzzzz……boring. The whole point of social media is to mix it up. Make the content different so that people have a reason to follow you in both places. If you are tweeting about the same things that you are posting on Facebook then why should I follow you on Twitter? You haven’t given me a compelling reason and I certainly don’t need to hear you repeat yourself twice.

Finally the content may be accurate, but the context will come across differently on different platforms. Remember that Twitter is only 140 characters and 120 if you do it right and want to be retweeted.  Plus, your friends and family on Facebook will thank you for disconnecting the two. If you’re a business, remember to mix up the content.
