Consumers: What the New Facebook Layout 2013 Means to You

Facebook News FeedI just got the new Facebook layout for the news feed today and got a chance to test it out. It’s actually a nicer layout for the people who are using it for what Facebook was originally intended for – keeping in touch with people you really know. But for brands, it’s not all that friendly and maybe Facebook has finally listened and acknowledged that their community doesn’t want to be marketed to all the time. The biggest change is Facebook now gives the end user a choice of feeds and (surprisingly) the default is ‘All Friends’. For those just interested in their friends’ updates, this is perfect. If you have friends that get a lot of interaction with their posts, then you might find most recent annoying.  ‘Following’ is for all brand pages you are following. Groups allows you to see all group updates at once. Photos allows you to see all photos from everyone  and all pages in your network.

If you scroll down and click See All, here is where you’ll see all of your friends’ lists and updates from where you work or where you go to school.

What will this mean for marketers and brands?

Essentially, brands will have to work even harder or pay more money to get in your news feed via sponsored stories or compelling content. The thing is, consumers will give brands one chance once they get the new layout. They’ll click on ‘Following’ and if the content is horrible and seems like spam, then they’ll more than likely not use that feed in the future.

Now brands are savvy enough to include photos in many of their posts so there is still a chance they can get in front of the consumer via the Photos stream since that includes everything from friends and brand pages. But it’s going to have to be a compelling photo.

How do you manage Brand pages or Groups you’re an Admin of?

If you manage brand Pages, you can now access them and any groups you manage via the left pane navigation. You can also turn on’ Chat’ there as well.

How do you access your privacy settings?

There are two ways to get there, either by the lock icon in the upper left next to your name, or in the settings option:


If you get stuck, you can always click on the help icon in the upper right to see answers to commonly asked questions such as: What happened to most recent? How can I access  my sidebar? etc.


But keep in mind, one little caveat is that the side bar is sensitive, meaning it only expands if there is room for it to expand.  According to Facebook:”

“Your sidebar is sensitive to the amount of free space you have on your screen, so it only expands if there’s enough room for it. If your sidebar isn’t expanded, try using your browser in fullscreen mode or adjusting your screen size.”

That kind of seems like a pain in the ass, but I haven’t heard a lot of people screaming about that thus far so I guess we’ll see if this becomes a major issue for Facebook. Given that not all users use the same screen size or same browser, it will be interesting to see how this unfolds.
