Optimizing Your Online Images

Whether you are giving a PowerPoint presentation or preparing a marketing ad, a picture tells a thousand words. That’s why it’s extremely important to have at least one image when you are creating content. That picture will transcend the reader or viewer a bit further in the journey of your message through the image. When you add an image to your content, make sure you optimize it for not only SEO, but also for quality and social sharing.

And don’t forget to give credit when you can to the origin of the image. You may not be able to easily find the origin, but you can always do a reverse Google image search. (click on the camera in the search bar and copy and paste the image URL).

Here are 7 ways to optimize your images online:

  1. Alt Text – adding alternate text to describe your image in the alt text attribute field will increase search engine optimization (SEO).
  2. Captions – adding a caption to your image using keywords will also help with SEO.
  3. Add to your sitemap – add image-specific tags to your sitemap so that search engines know that those images are important. For more information on  how to do this, see Google’s page image sitemaps.
  4. High resolution – images that are clear, have good composition and are at least a minimum of 300 dpi will be better received by your audience. For vector images, don’t forget to “create outlines” when saving in Illustrator so that the text is crisp.
  5. Standard file format – using .jpg, .png, or .gif will insure that anyone can see your image on any device as these are the most common file formats.
  6. Easy to share – make your images easy to share by posting them on sites like Instagram, Flickr, Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Picassa, or Pinterest.
  7. Size matters – you want to make sure that the image renders properly on both mobile and web. Large sized images typically don’t load well. Try and keep your image under 1MB.
