Pros and Cons of Blog Comments

Are you less successful or popular if your blog doesn’t have tons of blog comments?

Blog comments - Social Strand MediaWhen it comes to blogging, most bloggers feel that comments are their bread and butter in terms of building community and trust with their blog followers. However, some feel that comments can negatively impact your SEO and can be extremely time consuming to monitor. So I wanted to outline for you the pros and cons of allowing comments on your blog and let you decide for yourself. Because in the end, it entirely depends on what your goals and objectives are for your blog. Do you want to increase your overall site traffic? Do you want to monetize your blog? Do you want to convert readers into potential customers? Do you want to increase your brand’s influence? All of these things and more are what you need to figure out first, then you need to weigh those objectives against the pros and cons of blog comments.

Things you should consider before allowing blog comments on your blog:

  • Will you monitor every comment, or let them automatically post after they’ve been approved the first time?
  • Will you edit grammar on comments?
  • Will you not allow self-promotion?
  • Will you allow negative comments?
  • Will you allow people to disagree with you?

Once you decide on the above, it’s wise to make your comment policy public so that people who are leaving a comment can feel comfortable with doing so. You can put it in your footer or with a little coding, put it in the comment box.

Pros of blog comments:

  1. Blog comments build brand awareness & brand trust
  2. Blog comments build a community
  3. Blog comments help with SEO in terms of relevancy, recentness, and keywords
  4. Blog comments create more content
  5. Blog comments give you ideas for future blog posts

Cons of blog comments:

  1. You have to monitor for spam
  2. They can be detrimental to SEO because of date stamps
  3. They don’t help evergreen content due to date stamp of comment
  4. If not monitored, too many back links to sites that are not related to your content can damage your search engine ranking
  5. Too many spam comments devalue your blog among readers

And the list could go on. It’s important to implement a Akismet or something like that to filter out most of the spam comments, but you’re still bound to get a handful that sort of look legit, but aren’t, like this one:

They don’t always need to have a link in them or have poor grammar to be considered spam.

Not necessarily. Just like social media sites have voyeurs, so do blogs. Believe it or not, not everyone feels the need to share their opinion with the rest of the world. Look at Taylor Davies, she could care less if she has 100 blog comments or 1 blog comment, it’s about quality for her. Greg McFarlane says you should turn blog comments off for a better blog. And look at Michael Gray, he’s turned off comments completely.
