Social Media for the Writer

Networking with fellow writers can improve your craft, give you inspiration, and later help you with marketing your book or piece. But who has time for all of that socializing–you’ve got writing to do!

You need to have a platform to be marketable and the easiest way to do that is through social media. Yet, making time for social media and marketing yourself is taking away from your writing. It all seems like an oxymoron or necessary evil.

However, there are some low hanging fruit things that you an do in under a few minutes and easily maintain for another five to ten minutes per week. If you find you don’t have ten minutes a week to spare then hire someone to do it for you.

First and foremost, to get started with building your platform you need to have an area or two that you are focused on. Do you write sci-fi/fantasy, YA, women’s chic lit? Whatever your genre, stick with that first.

Second, the best places for writers to hang out tends to be on Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr. Once you figure out where your fans (future buyers of your work) are, set up camp and create a profile. Creating profiles takes only a couple of minutes. be sure to include your photo. people like to connect with real people, not silhouettes.

Once you have a profile, one of the easiest most simple and third thing you can do is add your social networks to your email signature. Be sure to add links if possible.

Now once you are set up, managing those sites can be a bear and a time suck. The best way to get around that is to use a desktop tool that allows you to aggregate all of your social media profiles, shortens links to your blogs, and allows you to schedule your facebook posting, tweeting and blogs for the future. This is imperative to getting back some time so that you can write! Also, try and mix it up a little by saying the same thing different ways or mixing up the content. How? keep reading.

Now, no one likes to be bombarded with shameless self-promotion so mix it up a bit. Schedule some inspiring quotes. Share your findings on the web because chance are your fans will be interested too. Pepper in a little bit about you, but don’t over do it.
