We all know just about everyone is using social media these days. From businesses to personal accounts, the trends in social media are undeniable. But how does a website owner take advantage of social media to increase traffic?

Share and Share Alike

Sharing on social media sites should very much be a two-way street. Self-promotion can get very old, so it’s important to make sure that you’re sharing other people’s content and interacting with them as well. Social sharing is very much a “scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours” environment, like it or not.

Make It Easy to Share Your Content

Facebook publishes statistics periodically and their stat for average friend count is 190. That means that the average Facebook user has 190 friends. If you have a site that has 500 ‘likes’, you have the potential to be in front of 95,000 people! Be sure to place a share button clearly visible on each site post. This will give the reader an option to share it on his or her Facebook, Twitter or other social media account, which will in turn reach the friends of your friends! This can continue like a chain reaction and give you exponentially higher traffic than you could get normally, without any sharing! This is the very definition of content going viral!

Interact With Your Followers

Having a social media account for your site is only the first step in being successful through social media. The second step is to actively participate. Make sure that you keep it active with questions and conversations. Your social presence shouldn’t be static. Keep your fans interacting with not only you but each other by including some questions, surveys or even the occasional contest. Interaction is key to engaging your fans and followers!

Social media is more than just showing up to the dance – it’s about participating. Give your fans and followers some evidence that you are a real person behind the site.
